An excerpt from “The Songs and Symbols of Tendon Levey” in which is detailed the circumstances surrounding this album:

“It was in this period that I began choking on food with an increasing frequency. I had experienced intermittent tightness in my throat for over a year at this point, though it was suddenly becoming more and more of a concern, and I was now having to stop eating solid food altogether, switching to a diet of oatmeal and yogurt so as to mitigate the risk of choking. The weather was becoming cold and it was worsening my suicidal depression and physical tension. In a fight against these things, I opted to revert back to blue and black light bulbs, doing away with the white light bulbs that had lit my room since last fall. I did this in an effort to recreate the pleasant and dreamlike conditions under which I recorded albums seven through ten. It was meant to ease my anxiety, although the result was unlike I intended, seeming only dark, ominous and cold in tone.”

“Clavos” is a type of nail (as well as being the Spanish word for nail) and alludes to the crucifixion in Christian mythology. It is essentially to say that “God made man and man made nails”, denoting an instance in which a creation turns against its creator and being applied to a period in which my actions finally began to catch up with me. In addition to a worsening suicidal depression, my manner of singing was leading to extreme bouts of dizziness, lightheadedness and the constriction of throat/neck muscles.
